Senufo "sejen" bird figures were used in rituals and ceremonies by the influential male Poro society for protection, to display strength, and to symbolize wisdom, fertility, and the continuity of the community. These hornbill sculptures were kept in sacred groves, carried in processions during initiations and funerals, and served as "ancestral sentinels" to protect the community and impart knowledge.
