Origin - Nok, Nigeria

In Trayvon, King Paris reimagines an ancient Nok figure, one of Africa’s earliest sculptural traditions — cloaked in a modern hoodie. The work bridges millennia, merging ancestral form with a symbol of contemporary struggle. By naming the piece Trayvon, Paris honors Trayvon Martin and the countless young Black men whose very presence, their clothing, their posture, their skin, has been misread as threat.

The sculpture stands as both elegy and defiance. The hoodie, a simple garment of youth and comfort, becomes an emblem of racial profiling and survival. Yet the Nok figure’s timeless poise and dignity reclaim the narrative, transforming fear into resilience, stereotype into sovereignty. Trayvon reminds us that history is not distant; it lives within the bodies of those still fighting to be seen as human, sacred, and whole.
