Senufo mother-and-child figures are used in rituals and ceremonies to promote fertility, embody ancestral maternity, and represent the community's continuity, often appearing in the context of the Poro society as well as in Sandogo divination practices. The figures symbolize the nurturing qualities of the mother, the continuity of life represented by the child, and the "Great Mother" or "Ancient Woman" who is central to Senufo beliefs and the education of initiates.
